Being located on St. John River's banks Jacksonville was inhabited by various races from the Timucua Indians to the French, Spanish and then the English. In 1821 the European colony of Florida was acquired by the United States from Spain and in 1822 it was given the name Jacksonville after the first military governor of the Florida region and the 7th President of USA, Andrew Jackson. The city got the approval from the Florida Legislative Council in 1832 on Feb. 9th.

The French invaded the area in 1562 and established first European colony in 1564 at Fort Caroline. In 1565 the Fort was attacked and captured by the Spanish army. In 1763 the British captured this Spanish colony in Florida after winning the Seven Years War. In 1783 the British lost the colony to Spain. In 1791 permanent settlement was established in Jacksonville for the first time.
At the time of the American Civil War the Union Forces barricaded Jacksonville. During the Gilded Age the city turned into a well known winter resort for elites.
The massive outbreak of yellow fever of the last phase of 19th century and the 1901 Great Fire afflicted Jacksonville tourism and economy largely. But between 1901 and 1910 the area saw rapid urbanization and huge economic growth.
Today the city of Jacksonville with its diverse history and culture attracts visitors from all around the world.
