Founded in the year 1934 and christened William J. Porter University, it was renamed Jacksonville Junior College a year later. In 1956 the name was again changed and it is now known as the Jacksonville University and the Dolphin has been chosen as their mascot.

The popularity of the University is quite evident with students from 27 countries having enrolled in various different courses. In 2006, Jacksonville University was among the first tier encompassing 150 other master's universities for the fourth consecutive year featuring in "America's best Colleges" list of the U.S. News and World Report.

The University's academic curriculum focuses on preparing the students in their chosen field so as to do their best in the graduation stage. The learning is not restricted to classrooms alone. The University offers over 70 majors and seven bachelor's degree courses to its students. The graduation courses include programs in business, orthodontics, nursing and education. Students also have the option of applying to the Adult Degree Program which conducts classes on weekends and evenings for their convenience.
