A good Jacksonville travel guide would be very helpful in understanding the lives of the slaves and would be well appreciated by those who love history. The original plantation was about 1000 acres and now most of it is forest and only 60 acres of the plantation remains.

This plantation has seen several owners over the years ever since the British rule in 1765. The ownership stayed longest with the Kingsley's in whose name the plantation is known even today. In 1955 it was transferred to the State of Florida and in 1991 was taken over by the National Park Services.

The structure that is most striking in the entire plantation is the owner's house along with a kitchen house that is attached. The owner's house resembling a British gentry's home of the 17th century is an architectural marvel in itself and dates back to 1797-98.

It is a magnificent 2 story building that has a huge room in the centre and 4 one story pavilions that were constructed in each corner which made air circulation easy and the house was very cool in summers. The fireplace in each room took care of the winters.

Florida division of Historical Resources is of the view that it is possibly the oldest house on a plantation in the state. The area also has about 25 slave cabins that are in ruins today and the foundation of all of these are said to be that of cement tabby. A visit to the Kingsley Plantation would take you back to a whole new world.
